Understanding Vaginal Dilators and Their Uses

Vaginal dilators are essential tools used in vaginal dilation therapy to treat various medical conditions that affect the vagina and pelvic floor muscles. There are a large number of conditions where vaginal dilation therapy may be recommended and can include GSM (genitourinary syndrome of menopause) vaginismus, MRKH, vaginal stenosis, dyspareunia (painful intercourse), pelvic floor dysfunction, side effects of cancer treatment including surgery or radiation therapy, endometriosis or other medical conditions.

At Pelvic Relief we have a range of dilators which include Soul Source’s unique range of graded vaginal silicone dilators, Soul Source GRS rigid dilators and EZMagic a curved therapeutic dilator or wand to treat pelvic floor muscle dysfunction.

What Are Vaginal Dilators?

Vaginal dilators, sometimes referred to as vaginal trainers, are smooth, cylindrical devices designed to be inserted into the vagina to gently stretch vaginal tissues and assist with the relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles. These dilators come in various sizes and are typically used in a progressive manner, starting with the smallest size and gradually moving to larger dilator size as comfort and tolerance improve. You can learn a bit more about how to get the most out of your vaginal dilation therapy at our blog.

How to Use Vaginal Dilators

Using vaginal dilators involves a consistent routine, typically several times per week. You may have been recommended dilation therapy by your healthcare practitioner and it is important with the management of any medical condition to follow the advice set by them. However many women find they are handed dilators without a proper understanding of how to integrate them into their rehabilitation so to get the most benefit from your dilation therapy here are general guidelines:

Preparation: Find a comfortable and private space make sure you are not under any time pressure if possible. Have your dilator set, water based or oil based lubricant, and a timer ready (try the YES or Desert Harvest range of water based or oil based lubricants, you should never use a silicone lubricant with silicone dilators).

Position: Recline in a supported position with your knees apart and bent, you may want to place pillows under your knees

Relaxation: Take deep breaths to relax your body and pelvic floor muscles.

Lubrication: Apply a generous amount of water based lubricant to the dilator and yourself to ensure smooth insertion.

Insertion: Gently insert the dilator into the vaginal opening, start with the smallest size. Move the dilator in and out and side to side to help stretch the vaginal tissues.

Duration: Keep the dilator in place for about 15 minutes, gently moving it throughout the session.

Progression: As you feel more comfortable, gradually move to a larger size to continue stretching the tissues effectively.
