Vaginal dilators are smooth, graduated medical devices that help gently restore comfort, flexibility and confidence. Used for a few minutes at a time, they're often recommended for vaginismus, painful sex, menopause and GSM, and recovery after pelvic radiotherapy or surgery. Dilation therapy is the careful, comfortable and slow insertion of a dilator into the vagina. Used regularly, it can help tight muscles relax and the tissues gently stretch, making penetration easier and more comfortable.

Size 6 is the largest size in our Medium set, and a natural next step once size 5 feels comfortable. Buy it on its own to add to what you already have, or to replace one from a set. It's also included in our Medium, Large and Full sets.

Good to know

What are Soul Source dilators made of?

Soul Source dilators are made from soft, smooth, medical grade silicone that is BPA and latex free. They were developed by sex therapist Jillian Romm with a gynaecologist at Oregon Health and Science University, for women undergoing progressive vaginal dilation therapy, and come in eight graduated sizes so you can progress gradually.

How do I clean and care for my dilators?

Wash your dilator in warm water with a mild soap after each use, then pat it dry and let it air dry completely before storing it somewhere clean and dry. A hair dryer on a low or medium setting can help it dry fully. For a deeper clean, you can boil it for five minutes. Use a water-based or oil-based lubricant, and avoid silicone-based lubricants, which can damage silicone over time.

Often recommended for

Healthcare professionals often suggest dilators to gently restore comfort, flexibility and confidence.

  • Vaginismus
  • Painful sex
  • Menopause and GSM
  • After pelvic radiotherapy
  • After vaginal surgery
  • Pelvic floor tightness
  • MRKH syndrome

Changing hormones, surgery, radiotherapy and involuntary muscle tightening can all leave the vagina feeling narrower, drier or less flexible, which can make sex, examinations or using tampons painful. Used gently and regularly, dilators can help the tissues stretch and the pelvic floor muscles relax, gradually improving comfort and confidence. Soul Source dilators are made from soft, medical grade silicone in eight graduated sizes, so you can progress at your own pace.

 How to use your dilators

A few gentle minutes a day, at a pace that feels right for you.

1. Make time to relax

1. Make time to relax

Choose a quiet, private moment when you won't be interrupted, and take a few slow, deep breaths to help your pelvic floor muscles soften.

2. Use plenty of lubricant

2. Use plenty of lubricant

Apply a generous amount of water-based or oil-based lubricant to the dilator and the vaginal opening.

3. Go slowly

3. Go slowly

Start with the largest size that feels comfortable, or the smallest if you're unsure. Insert it gently, only as far as feels comfortable, and hold it there for a few minutes. If it hurts, stop and try a smaller size.

 4. Build up gradually

 4. Build up gradually

Practise for a few minutes each day. Once a size feels comfortable, move up to the next one at your own pace.

If you've had surgery or radiotherapy, follow your healthcare team's advice on when to start.

Pair your dilators with the right lubricant

Using plenty of lubricant makes dilation smoother and more comfortable. YES WB is a water-based lubricant that is pH and osmolality matched to the vagina, so it's gentle on delicate tissue. If you prefer something richer and longer lasting, YES OB is a plant-oil based lubricant, and Olive & Bee intimate cream also works well with Soul Source dilators.

FAQs

Which size should I start with?

Start with the largest size that feels comfortable, or the smallest if you're unsure or have pain or tightness. You should be able to insert it slowly, with plenty of lubricant, without pain. Our sizing guide explains how to choose.

How often should I use my dilators?

A few minutes each day is a good place to start, building up the time as it gets easier. If your healthcare team has given you a specific plan, follow their advice.

Should dilation hurt?

No. A gentle stretching sensation is normal, but it shouldn't be painful. If it hurts, stop, take a breath and try a smaller size. If you notice bleeding, ongoing pain or anything that worries you, speak to your healthcare professional.

Do I need to see a healthcare professional first?

Many people use dilators on the advice of a clinician or pelvic health physiotherapist, and we'd always encourage this if your symptoms are complex or there's any risk of prolapse. The POGP directory lists women's health physiotherapists across the UK.

Can I use dilators after radiotherapy or surgery?

Dilators are often recommended after pelvic radiotherapy and vaginal or gynaecological surgery. Your healthcare team will advise when it's safe to start, so follow their guidance on timing.

Which lubricant should I use?

Use plenty of water-based or oil-based lubricant, such as YES WB, YES OB or Olive & Bee intimate cream. Avoid silicone-based lubricants, which can damage silicone dilators over time.

Can I share my dilators?

No. Soul Source dilators are designed for use by one person only.

I've had gender affirming surgery. Are these the right dilators for me?

We also stock Soul Source GRS dilators, which are designed for use after gender affirming surgery and have different sizing. Your surgical team can advise which sizes to use.

Can I buy extra sizes later?

Yes. All eight sizes are sold individually, so you can add the next size up whenever you're ready.
