Vaginismus

Vaginismus is the involuntary spasm of a woman’s pelvic floor muscles which surround the vagina. These spasms can be so severe that the vagina closes, leading to dyspareunia (painful sex), painful tampon insertion and discomfort during pelvic exams (such as a smear test).

The pain is typically described as a burning sensation that may intensify as intercourse continues. Vaginismus is a leading cause of unconsummated relationships, with a variety of potential causes, however, most clinicians believe it involves both physical and emotional factors.

There are four different classifications:

  1. Primary vaginismus (lifelong)
  2. Secondary vaginismus (occurring after a period of normal sexual function)
  3. Global vaginismus (occurring in all situations, during intercourse, tampon insertion, or pelvic exams)
  4. Situational vaginismus (occurring during intercourse with one partner, but not other partners, or only during intercourse, but not with tampon insertion or pelvic exams)

Vaginismus can affect women at any stage of their lives. You can find a pelvic health physiotherapist by asking for referral from your doctor or by visiting Pelvic, Obstetric, Gynaecological Physiotherapy.
