It is possible to give a basic indication of the overall status of the results and whether they fit into a state of balance or dysbiosis. The below are what we class as balanced and dysbiotic from our parameters.

Balanced (all of the below are true)

  • pH between 4.0 or 4.7
  • Total beneficial bacteria is over 80% of total bacteria (and lactobacillus iners isn’t the dominant strain)
  • There is low microbial diversity (<4)

A result of balanced indicates a healthy vaginal microbiome. Results should be discussed with the patient in context of any health concerns or presenting symptoms.

Dysbiosis (one or more of the below are true)

  • pH over 4.5
  • Beneficial bacteria is less than 80% of total bacteria
  • There is diversity of opportunistic microbes over 4

A result of dysbiosis indicates imbalance. Results should be discussed with the patient in the context of their presenting symptoms.
