Our vaginal microbiome at-home test kit uses Precision Microbiome Profiling, a quantitative molecular qPCR-based testing methodology that delivers a comprehensive analysis of your vaginal microbiome. This advanced technology accurately identifies and quantifies clinically relevant microbial species, providing detailed insights into the composition and balance of your vaginal environment.

Too many women are told their symptoms are normal. They're not, and you deserve better answers. This is why accurate testing is important for identifying the underlying cause.

  • Unusual discharge
  • Unusual odour
  • Vaginal burning
  • Vaginal itching
  • Painful sex
  • Vulval soreness
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Recurrent UTIs
  • Urinary urgency
  • Urinary frequency
  • Cloudy urine
  • Bladder discomfort
  • Vaginal discomfort

Many conditions present with similar symptoms, however each is driven by a different microbial picture. For conditions such as recurrent BV, thrush, aerobic vaginitis and urinary tract infections, knowing which organisms are present and in what quantity is central to understanding what is happening.

If you’re trying to conceive

Vaginal microbiome testing may be helpful to give you and your clinician a clearer starting point.

If you're in menopause

Testing may help you understand how oestrogen depletion may be affecting your vaginal microbiome.

If you're struggling with UTIs

Testing may be helpful to understand if your vaginal microbiome is a risk factor for further bladder infections

Standard Diagnostics

Most standard diagnostics are not sensitive enough to differentiate between conditions and identify symptom drivers, resulting in many women inadequately addressing the root cause of their issue.

The infographic compares standard diagnostic approaches including microscopy and culture, then shows how incomplete testing can lead to a cycle of symptoms, treatment, temporary relief and recurrence.

Microscopy

Material from your vaginal swab is placed on a glass slide and examined under a microscope by a trained microbiologist. Because this type of microscopy requires experts to interpret the results accurately, it is now used less often.

Culture

Most vaginal and urinary tests rely on culture methods, where samples are grown in a lab to identify organisms. The problem is that a lot of bacteria do not grow well, or do not grow at all under standard culture conditions.

Current testing methods are not always able to identify what is truly causing the problem. As a result, women can spend years trapped in a cycle of getting treatment without lasting relief.

Our Test

Our molecular PMP™ testing methodology can quantify the absolute number of each bacteria and yeast strain present, helping you get to the root cause of symptoms.

Molecular testing

Molecular testing can detect small amounts of bacteria that culture may miss. It is also more accurate for mixed infections because it can identify multiple bacteria at the same time. Our vaginal microbiome test is designed to identify the specific bacteria driving symptoms.

Why Test?

Testing can help identify which microbes may be causing symptoms and how many healthy bacteria are present too, so rebalancing interventions can be targeted and long lasting.

Human DNA concentration

Sample quality

Human DNA concentration reflects the amount of DNA from vaginal epithelial cells detected on the swab. The vaginal lining naturally sheds cells as part of a normal, healthy process, and these are picked up during sampling. This marker acts as a quality check to confirm a good sample was collected, and can be influenced by factors such as oestrogen status, menstrual cycle stage, microbial composition, inflammation, and swab technique.

FAQs

Who can use this test?

The test is for women aged 18 or over living in the UK.

Can I take the test during pregnancy?

Yes. The test uses a low vaginal swab, which is safe in pregnancy. If you are pregnant, please review your results with a healthcare professional.

How does the test work?

Your sample is analysed using Precision Microbiome Profiling, a qPCR method that measures the exact quantity of each of 53 species, rather than simply recording whether they are present.

How is this different from a swab at my GP?

Standard testing relies on culture, where a sample is grown in a lab. Many vaginal bacteria grow poorly or not at all under those conditions, so they can be missed.

How long will my results take?

We return results within 14 working days of you posting your sample back to us. That window covers return postage and laboratory processing, so you know when to expect your report. In practice results are often available sooner.

How long is my sample stable for?

The swab is stable for 4 weeks from collection, so it must reach our laboratory within that time. We recommend returning it within 2 weeks of taking the sample.

How is my data kept safe?

Please see our Vaginal Microbiome Testing Service Privacy Policy for full detail on how your data is handled.
