Opportunistic yeasts

Inflammatory yeasts, if allowed to proliferate, can cause unpleasant thrush like symptoms in women. No detection of these strains is ideal, or a low, controlled amount may be acceptable for some individuals (under 5,000 genomic copies / ml). Yeast overgrowth can be extremely inflammatory on the tissues of the vagina and vulva, causing pain, itching, redness, and a white discharge. Symptoms are driven by mucosal inflammation, epithelial invasion and evasion of the host immune response.1

If high levels of yeast are found on the report, anti-fungal treatment should be considered specific for the yeast strain present. There are many lifestyle and health factors which can influence the growth of yeast, including hormones, diet, immune status, microbe exposure via partners, and these factors need addressing in cases of chronic yeast.
