Lichen sclerosus

Lichen sclerosus is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that can affect any area of the skin, though it most commonly impacts the genital region (vulva) and the skin around the anus. It can develop in women and girls of all ages, typically either during childhood or later in life, usually after menopause.

Many women living with lichen sclerosus report being unable to have sexual intercourse due to tearing, splitting, bleeding, and intense burning sensations during sex. This occurs because the skin on the vulva and around the vagina becomes thin, and the vaginal opening may shrink due to atrophy and scarring.

Additionally, many women experience the loss of their labia minora, with the clitoris becoming buried under the skin, leading to tearing and discomfort during intercourse and even when wiping after urination.

To access the right medical support it is really important to discuss your symptoms with your doctor. For detailed information on lichen sclerosus, including treatments, research and links to support groups, visit the Lichen Sclerosus and Vulval Cancer UK Awareness site.
